NEBOSH has redeveloped the popular “International General Certificate (IGC)” with the feedback of 3000 learning partners worldwide. The New pattern IGC is now based on more practical knowledge and trustworthy more than ever before. The new pattern IGC is more focused on “Risk Assessment”. Lets have a look in major changes:

Previously the IGC syllabus is divided into 3 units. Unit IGC1 is further divided into five elements and Unit GC2 into eight elements.
And Now with new syllabus IGC is divided in only 2 units IG1 & IG2.

Unit IG1 assessment done by 4 elements namely:
1) Why we should manage workplace health and safety
2) How health and safety management systems work and what they look like
3) Managing risk – understanding people and processes
4) Health and safety monitoring and measuring

Unit IG2 is basically Risk Assessment which should be completed after studying following elements:
1) Physical and psychological health
2) Musculoskeletal health
3) Chemical and biological agents
4) General workplace issues
5) Work equipment
6) Fire
7) Electricity

Assessment Criteria
For IG1 the assessment criteria are four elements with following learning outcomes:
> Justify health and safety improvements using moral, financial and legal arguments
> Advise on the main duties for health and safety in the workplace and help their organisation manage contractors
> Work within a health and safety management system, recognising what effective policy, organisational responsibilities and arrangements should look like
> Positively influence health and safety culture and behaviour to improve performance in their organisation
> Explain the principles of the risk assessment process
> Recognise workplace changes that have significant health and safety impacts and effective ways to minimise those impacts
> Develop basic safe systems of work (including taking account of typical emergencies) and knowing when to use permit-to-work systems or special risks
> Explain why and how incidents should be investigated, recorded and reported
> Help their employer to check their management system effectiveness – through monitoring, audits and reviews

IG2 Assessment:
There is no passing marks in IG2 or you may say that learner have to complete 100% requirements of IG2. The assessment will be done based on below criteria:
(Remember: If any of below criteria is not met, you will be refer (fail))

Part 1: Description of the organisation and methodology used
The description includes:
-The name of the organisation
-The site location
-Number or workers employed
-The general description includes: products manufactured/services offered; types of activities; shift patterns
-Description of the area to be included in the risk assessment
-Methodology used to include: sources of information, who was consulted and how you decided on the additional control measures
Part 2: Risk assessment:
– Identify Minimum of 10 hazards
-The identified hazards are taken from at least 5 hazard categories
-Each column of the risk assessment table has been completed for each of the identified hazards
Part 3: Prioritise 3 actions with justification for the selection
3 actions have been selected
Justification includes:
-Moral, legal and financial arguments
-Likelihood and severity considered for each action
-Description of how effective the action will be in controlling the risk for each action
Part 4: Review, communicate and check
-Realistic review date given
-Reason for review date given
-Indicate how the risk assessment findings will be communicated
-Indicate who the risk assessment findings will be communicated to
